Display and pagination
Scenaloom paginates screenplays on US Letter in Courier Prime 12 pt with standard screenplay margins, and Paged view, the page count and the PDF all come from one layout engine. Display settings change only how the page looks to you; they never change the script.
Page size, font and margins
- US Letter in Courier Prime 12 pt: 10 characters per inch, 6 lines per inch and 55 lines per page.
- Text starts 1.5 inches from the left edge, with 1 inch at the right and the top.
- Scene headings, action and shots run the full 60-character width. Character cues sit 22 characters in, parentheticals run from 16 to 40 and dialogue from 10 to 45. Transitions are right-aligned.
- One blank line comes before scene headings, action, shots, cues and transitions.
- From page 2, the page number prints as "2." in the top right corner.
Minimal, Paged and Speed modes
- Minimal: one continuous sheet with no page breaks drawn — the fastest way to draft.
- Paged: real pages, with breaks, (MORE) and (CONT'D) exactly where the PDF puts them.
- Speed: drops the paper and shadow and sets the script as a plain column with tight margins, for moving through very long scripts.
(MORE) and (CONT'D) across page breaks
A scene heading, shot or character cue never ends a page; it moves to the next page with what follows. A transition never opens a page. When a speech crosses a page break, at least two lines stay on each side, the first page ends with (MORE) and the next continues under the character's name with (CONT'D).
How many pages is a screenplay?
A page of screenplay runs roughly one minute of screen time, so a 110-page feature runs close to two hours. The rule of thumb holds because every script shares the same font and margins, though quick dialogue plays faster than dense action. The format bar shows the page you are on out of the total, and the story map marks your target length — pages written past it show in red.
Hollywood and Asian layouts
Hollywood is the US layout described above. The Asian layout is tuned for Chinese, Japanese and Korean scripts: scenes are numbered, a cast line lists who appears, and each speech is set on one line with the speaker's name instead of in a centered column. Final Draft and Fountain exports always use the Hollywood layout, and page locking works only in Hollywood.
Display options
- Text size Small, Medium or Large, and line spacing Compact, Normal or Relaxed.
- Scene numbers on or off, in both layouts.
- Mark a character highlights one character's name, dialogue and parentheticals so an actor can find their lines. It applies only on this device.
Locking scene numbers and pages
For production drafts, open Scene numbers in the header. Lock scene numbers keeps every number in place: scenes added later become 5A and 5B, and an omitted scene keeps its number and prints as OMITTED. Lock pages does the same for pages: material that grows continues on 12A and 12B, and a page whose material is cut prints as OMITTED. You can also give any scene a custom number, letter it after the scene before (12A), or return it to its automatic number. Unlocking numbers everything in order again.
